Jealous husband from hell beat his wife for every Facebook ‘like’ she received forcing her to get facial reconstruction surgery

AN abused wife had her face reconstructed after her jealous husband punched her every time she received a Facebook “like”.

Adolfina Camelli Ortigoza, 21, was rescued last week after being held captive in her home and subject to constant beatings,
according to police.

Adolfina was beaten so badly by her husband she had to have facial reconstruction surgery.

Her face was completely disfigured by the blows to her body and face.

Yesterday the woman's lawyer told how partner Pedro Heriberto Galeano, 32, would become violent when anyone liked the photos she posted of herself on Facebook.

He began to beat her up every time one of her friends on Facebook reacted to any of her posts.

Galeano later took control of her Facebook page, where he would post pictures of her, and continued to punch and kick her for every 'like' the posts received.

Galeano took control of his wife's Facebook account after he became jealous of her
Lawyer Arnaldo Martinez told how Ms Ortigoza, from Nemby near Asuncion, Uruguay, would dread a notification telling her that someone had reacted or commented on a post.

Her friends had no idea that each time they made the friendly online gesture she would be brutally beaten.

He said: "Her mouth was all broken, she was very damaged, her skin was hanging off because of the blows.

"He controlled the victim's social networking sites, he controlled the messages and photos, and for every 'like' she received from her friends, the woman received a beating because he accused her
of having a relationship with them."

Adolfina , 21, was beaten black and blue by her evil spouse.

Mr Martinez said she only didn't lose her teeth because "he would put a cloth in her mouth so that she would not scream during the brutal beatings that she suffered daily."

The man's father finally reported his violent son to the police after he believed the woman would die following the last beating she received, according to reports.

Ms Ortigoza was so disfigured by the violence she wasn't able to recognised herself after being shown photos of herself after being beaten.

Men are to blame for Nigeria’s woes – Ezekwesili

A former Vice - President of the World Bank and former Minister of Education, Dr . Oby Ezekwesili , has said that male political leaders are to blame for the poor state of
affairs in Nigeria and Africa as a whole .
She also absolved women of any blame , saying they have had only a “ marginal ” role to play in the poor governance that has bedeviled the continent .

She stressed the need to have more women
at all levels of government and good representation at all arms of government — executive , legislature and judiciary .

Ezekwesili , who was the keynote speaker at the maiden edition of the HID Awolowo Foundation annual lecture in Lagos on Tuesday , said research had shown that in
Africa, only five per cent of women are chief executive officers , only 22 per cent of women are cabinet members, 25 per cent are parliamentarians , 29 per cent are managers, while a mere 36 per cent get promotion .

In the lecture , themed ‘ Ethical , politics , peace , development and security in Nigeria : The critical importance of women ’ s leadership , ’ Ezekwesili said it was time Nigerian women disrupted the political process.

That had acted as a barrier for them to enter into the political space , noting that the barrier ranges from cultural, economic , social , religious to self- imposed barriers .

She said , “ For as long as the women are held down , the trend analysis does not show any reversal of outcome.

Nobody does any favour to Nigerian women by involving them in governance .

“ Women are incredible human resource that we must put to use , and what this says to us is that we need to be more intentional and deliberate .

“ Research shows that when many more women are at decision - making level , there is less corruption and a wise society would know that empowering its women is
smart economics.

“ The only way to honour the memory of Yeye Oodua is to take it to that next level; disrupt this model , which is no longer sustainable . ”

Earlier, the convener , Dr . Tokunbo Awolowo - Dosumu , said the motive behind the setting up of the foundation and the annual lecture was , among other things , to set a standard of excellence which Yeye Odua was known for and ensure that her outstanding qualities continue to inform the national architecture of values and character building.

The chairman of the occasion , Senator Daisy Danjuma, who also eulogised late Mrs . HID Awolowo , said younger women
have a lot to learn from her virtues and passion for excellence.

At the event were Chief Awolowo’ s eldest daughter , Revd . Tola Oyediran ; former governor of Ondo State , Dr .
Olusegun Mimiko ; former Minister of Information, Mr . Labaran Maku ; Pastor Tunde Bakare and his wife ,
Olayide; wife of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development , Mrs . Bisi Fayemi ; representatives of Sultan of Sokoto and the Obi of Onitsha; Alakenne of Ikenne; Otunba Gani Adams and Prof . Alaba Ogunsanwo , among others .

You Are Welcome To Graze In Kogi State- Yahaya Bello To Fulani Herdsmen

LOKOJA— Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has kicked against the anti-grazing laws enacted by some of his colleagues in Benue and Taraba states, saying herdsmen were welcome to graze in any part of the state.

Governor Bello stated this during an emergency state security stakeholders’ meeting attended by traditional rulers, Fulani settlers, political administration and security personnel over incessant clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers.

Bello added that the herdsmen can call their kinsmen displaced in other states to Kogi State.

The traditional ruler of Elete, Chief Ahmed Aku, who was kidnapped last year by herdsmen, had advised the governor to follow the example of Benue and Ekiti governors.

However, Bello responded passionately, saying, “I will not enact any law to stop Fulani herdsmen from coming to Kogi State. I will not be part of any law that will forbid them from carrying out their normal business in Kogi State.

“Why don’t we develope a law that will make us live together harmoniously and tap from our different economic values?

“The next ‘oil’ this country is rediscovering now is agriculture. So if you don’t want anybody to disrupt the farms, I beseech you to also allow the Fulani carry out their businesses.”

… reads riot act to monarchs, LG bosses
The governor also threatened to dethrone any traditional ruler whose domain was used as a battle ground between farmers and herdsmen.

His words: “We will dethrone any traditional ruler of the land where such occurred; including removing any administrator of such local government—appointed or elected.”

Bello directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure the Fulani were integrated into the traditional council area of all the local government areas of the state.

He ruled: “There must, henceforth, be a representative of Fulani in the local traditional council. This must also be replicated at the area traditional council, while the Secretary to the State Government must see that a Fulani representative is present at the state council.

“This will ensure that the Fulani are aware of, and are part of decision making in the state.”

He also directed his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Jerry Moodart, to commence the process of taking census of Fulani resident in all the 21 councils in the state.

2019: Buhari Hints On Contesting Again

ABUJA – IN what appears to be his subtle way of announcing his willingness to seek re-election in 2019 presidential election, President Muhammadu Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday night explained the reason behind having the governors of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and that of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar to be present when he (Buhari) addressed the Nigerian community in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
President Buhari specifically said the presence of the two governors during his interactive session with the Nigerian community in the country will be another vote for him when the time comes.

The President is in Abidjan, for the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit and was accompanied by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu who was instrumental in Buhari’s emergence in 2015 after three unsuccessful attempts to become civilian president.

While apologizing for keeping some members of Nigerian community in Abidjan who had come for the interactive session waiting, President Buhari explained that he insisted on having governors Emmanuel and Abubakar present so that Nigerians in Côte d’Ivoire from the two states will be happy that he was accompanied by their governors and that might end him votes in future.

He said, “First I want to apologize for keeping you for too long seating, this is because I insisted on the governors attending this meeting. This is why I came along with them so that when we are going to meet you, when you are going to meet the rest of Nigerians if you tell them that their governors were in the accompany of the president, I think that will be another vote for me in future. I’m very pleased that they were able to turn up.”

This subtle way of announcing his intentions to contest in the 2019 election attracted laughter and accolades for him.

The President also said that his support for the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, despite serving as minister in a PDP-led government was to further confirm his remarks at his inauguration on May 29th, 2015, that he belonged to everybody and nobody in particular.

The President was reacting to Adesina’s gratitude to his administration for supporting him to get the job, leading to him becoming the first Nigerian to head the continental bank since it was set up in 1964.

He said, “the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), who forgot to mention that he was serving in the PDP government as minister but all the same I picked him and recommended him for AfDB. I think it emphasized what I said during my swearing in that I’m for everybody, I’m for nobody. As long as you are a Nigerian be prepared to be on the receiving end from me.”

President Buhari also thanked the national leader, of the All Progressive Congress Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for bringing him a beautiful piece of information which he was not aware of until now.

Buhari however did not disclose what piece of information it was but promised to discuss it in detail with Tinubu.

According to him, “I also thank our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has brought me a very beautiful piece of information which I was not aware of it until I sat down and read it this evening (Tuesday night). Thank you very much for your hardwork and I will discuss that paper with you.”

Adesina in his remarks noted that the economy picked up soon after the President’s health, adding that “so it seems there is a correlation between the President’s health and the improved economy.“

On security, Adesina said the bank has released $250 million for the construction and rehabilitation of the Northeast, destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

He also said that the AfDB has constructed a big building behind the Yar’Adua centre that started in 2016 and completed.

He said it is the first of such building by AfDB outside its Abidjan headquarters which he will want President Buhari to commissioned.

Adesina said, “I want to thank you immensely. I want to thank God for your health because I must say that for all of us that has been a big concern. But seeing you fit as a fiddle and seeing you back in action, we thank God for that and may God continue to give you great strength.

“Mr. President as you must have noticed, there is a very strong correlation between your health and the economy and when you came back the economy picked up after that. So we wish you great health so that the the economy can continue to pick.

“I also want to congratulate you for the economic growth and recovery plan that you have put in place and the incredible plan that you have put in place to bring the economy out of recession and also in terms of the fact that Nigeria has moved up in the World Bank ease of doing business index.

“Is to your leadership, vision and commitment that we want to from the African Development Bank commend you Mr. President and to assure you of our strong support behind you and your government for the efforts to try and move Nigeria forward. We are solidly behind you, you can count on that.

“I also want to thank you for your leadership on the Boko Haram issue because to draw investments into Nigeria, you absolutely have to have security. I think that securing our borders is very very important thanks to your leadership for that. I also thank you for all the efforts you have made in the Lake Chad Basin Area.

“I was with you in Paris where you led the efforts in reviving the Lake Chad Basin. As you know Mr. President, the bank is very strongly behind that. We put in $250 million to support the northeast of Nigeria rebuilding. I know you were criticize for rebuilding but I don’t see anything wrong, if things get destroyed they have to be rebuilt and the African Development Bank has contributed $250 million towards that.”

Governor Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State is of the Peoples Democratic Party, one of the states it was alleged that the ruling APC was interested in winning because of its large deposits of oil.

Gelegele-gbene And The Ijaw, Benin Crisis – Before Edo State Burns

The stern warning issued by the governor of Edo State to Ijaw communities in his state over their attempt to install a traditional ruler to preside over their affairs calls for serious concern. For governor Obaseki to insinuate that Edo people are merely tolerating Ijaw people is unbecoming of a state governor. It is common knowledge that apart from the Oba of Benin, there are several other traditional rulers who of course do not replace the Oba but assists in the governance of their people, therefore, one wonders why it is a taboo for the Ijaws to nominate a traditional chief to oversee their own affairs.

Personally I believe that the ethnic interwoven nature of the Niger Delta requires a concerted effort from government towards promoting peaceful cohabitation rather than fan the embers of division. The mere fact that one ethnic group have a population advantage over another does not make them owners of the land. The Bini’s have always lived peacefully side by side with their Ijaw neighbours for several decades until recently when Ijaw communities became economically important. As a government and as responsible citizens, our effort must be geared towards deemphasizing ethnicity in the interest of nationhood in order to avoid the catastrophic costs associated with intertribal crisis.

Gelegele-gbene people must be treated as equal citizens of Edo State especially because they are in their ancestral land even though they are surrounded by Benin people. We must also remember that even in Bayelsa State where Ijaws are the predominant tribe, an Urhobo village inhabited mainly by Urhobo people can still be found in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state. Can the Ijaws chase them out of Bayelsa State due to their small population? Obviously not.

A popular Bini folklore made it clear that, when the Bini’s first arrived in Edo State from Ile Ife, they met fisher men living in small communities scattered all over the riverine areas of Edo State. The British had referred to those fishing communities as fishing ports, these were small villages that depend on products from the sea. The Ijaws were mainly primitive people at that time living off the sea and farm products from nearby villages. They were traditional worshippers, believing in sea gods. They were not interested in mass acquisition of land, hence, they welcomed visitors/settlers with open arms provided such settlers were willing to travel far inland. Hence, when the Bini’s came to Edo State, they were welcomed by the Ijaws. A popular Bini folklore was that when the Oba and his people arrived from Ile Ife, they were ferried in canoes across the river by Ijaw fisher men living in villages around the riverine areas of the state. This is a very popular and widespread narrative which every Edo man is aware of. The Ijaws of those days were more interested in protecting their immediate settlements, hence, they made the mistake of not possessing the entire land in Edo State even though they were the aborigines. In contrast, the Bini’s from Ile Ife were more sophisticated, they were farmers with a well organized monarchy system of government in place, on arrival to Edo State, the traditional monarchy system they had brought from Ife continued, they travelled far inland away from Ijaw settlements and wasted no time in possessing the land around them (excluding Ijaw areas) for agriculture. They traded with the Ijaws and lived peacefully with their neighbours for many decades, however, this peaceful co-existence was shattered when oil exploration began in the Niger Delta, it turned out that many Ijaw settlement all over the Niger Delta became oil producing communities, the oil found in their territories made them a target of persecution by their neighbours.

The Ijaws are the sacrificial lamp of the Niger Delta, they are persecuted by their Niger Delta neighbours and the Nigerian State. They face constant harassment and bombardment by the Nigerian army and their neighbours. Many Ijaw sons and daughters have died fighting for a better Niger Delta, yet, whenever any project is to be approved in Ijaw territories, their neighbours will either lay claims to the land, oppose the projects, demand for a change of name or for a lion share even when such projects are as a result of years of struggle by the Ijaws.

Due to the constant hostility and lack of opportunities to Ijaws in Edo State, the population of Ijaws in the state have declined significantly in the last 25 years as many Ijaws have migrated to Delta, Bayelsa, Ondo and Lagos state. As it is now clear that the Ijaws will make a stand on Gelegele-gbene and the other remaining Ijaw settlements, efforts must be made to avert Edo State from becoming a war zone. Every citizen of the state should be carried along in the interest of peace and fairplay. The political exclusion of Ijaws in Edo State must be addressed so that they can also have their turn in Edo State Government House. Above all, the Bini’s must realise that it is impracticable to expect Ijaws to leave their ancestral land.

Asup Suspends Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its nationwide strike 15 days after the industrial action began.

National President of ASUP, Mr Usman Duste, announced this on Wednesday during the union’s 14th National Delegates Conference at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi state.

He said the decision to suspend the strike followed the series of meetings held between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government.

According to him, both parties agreed to a Memorandum of Settlement and Action (MoS) on each of the issues raised by the union.

“The union considered the suspension to give an opportunity for implementation of the content of Memorandum of Settlement and Action, and shall be reviewed according to the timelines outlined in the MoS,” Duste said.

The decision to commence an indefinite strike was the outcome of the National Executive Council meeting of ASUP which held on November 11 at the Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State.

According to the union, the industrial action followed the failure of the Federal Government to implement all the agreements it entered with them since 2016.

Some of the demands included non-implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report and shortfalls in personnel releases and withdrawal of allowances.

Others were non-passage of the amended bill of the Polytechnic Act, alleged infractions in the appointment of rectors, as well as improving the conditions of state-owned institutions among other issues.

The union had lamented that despite the long period given to the government to address some of the issues it had raised, government did not consider it necessary to address the demands for improved funding of polytechnic education in the country.

Dutse had also told reporters after the Council meeting that ASUP had given government sufficient time to implement all the agreements, saying they had no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued earlier.

“On October 24, a reconciliation meeting was convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour in Abuja. The ministry in the eye of the storm, the Federal Ministry of Education, was poorly represented that no memorandum of action was agreed on.

“This clearly shows the level of disdain and disrespect with which the issues of the sector are being handled by the relevant agencies. In view of the above, our union resolved in its emergency meeting of NEC on October 31, 2017 to commence an indefinite and comprehensive strike effective from November 13, 2017,” he had said.

Federal government to sell National Theater, TBS , others to fund National budget

THE Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), the National Arts Theatre and some selected power plants under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) are part of the key national assets the Federal Government has
concluded plans to sell, House of Representatives’ members were told
yesterday.

The purpose of the proposed sale is to generate sufficient revenue to finance the country’s annual budgets for the next three years (2018-2020).

Director General of Budget Office Ben Akabueze, who told the House of
Representatives Joint Committees on 2018-2020 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF)/ Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) about the plan, noted that the Federal Government’s non-core assets from the
mines and steel sector like houses and estates are part of items slated for sale.

According to Akabueze, items for the 2018 budget would be financed from the revenue garnered from sales of the key government assets as well as national parks.

He said proceeds from the privatisation of the assets would be used to finance the budget deficit of N2.005 trillion, much of which will be financed through domestic and foreign borrowings, adding that the
aspect had been factored into the 2018 budget.

The country, he said, was generating too little revenue, hence it was expedient to borrow.

The Director General of Budget Office added that the reverse would be the case, if actually the assets were generating Qrevenues. “We are generating too little revenue, hence we are borrowing. If we
generate enough, borrowing ratio will drop,” he said.

However, chairman of the joint committee, Babaginda Aliu, frowned at the absence of five Federal Government agencies he described as critical to the 2018 budget consideration and passage, which were
invited to the session.

He noted that notwithstanding the late submission of the MTEF/ Fiscal Strategy Paper, the committee was committed to streamline its activities to pass the document and ensure the budget is passed in record time.

The Minister of State for Budget and Planning, Hajia Zaniab Ahmed,
representative of the Governor of Central Bank, Adelabu R.A. and Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) Dr. Tunde Fowler made presentations during the session.

Also present were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance Alhaji Mohammed Isa Dutse, who represented the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun; and the Comptroller-General of Customs Col Hameed Ali was represented by Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in
charge of T&T, Alu S.R.

You must pay workers before Christmas, Buhari orders govs

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari ordered the 36 governors to pay workers their salaries before Christmas so that workers will have a beautiful celebration.

The President therefore directed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the Minister of Economic Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma and the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi  Adeosun to negotiate with the governors of the figure from the Paris Club refund.

These were parts of the resolutions at the meeting between the President and the governors of the Paris Club refunds at the
Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, Chairman of Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha flanked by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said that the meeting centered on the need for workers to be paid their salaries before Christmas and the 50 percent Paris Club refunds the was outstanding.

Governor Olivia said, “It was a brief meeting between the Governors of Nigeria and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The discussion centered on basically the end of the year and the
President himself had expressed the need to make sure that every Nigerian especially the workers have a beautiful Christmas.

“The issues of the outstanding Paris Club was discussed and that was taken care of to make sure that workers in various states
everywhere in the country get to celebrate the Christmas.

“We also used the opportunity to review our working relationship with the President from the states and we found out that we are in harmony. There is no difference between us and the president.

Everybody seems to be happy working together. “But particularly, we commended the president for the miracle of getting Nigeria out of recession within such a short time. We commended Mr. President and everybody left quite happy.

“We are looking at getting the balance of Paris Club refund thrashed out once and for all. We also made a request for Mr. President’s approval that the balance should form part of our 2018 budget,
because we can’t include it until we are sure that the money is coming. That was also sorted out.

“So, as it is now, the issue of workers took the centre stage because Mr. President felt much concerned about those who depend on their salaries to feed their families and pay their house rent and he had the assurance of governors that we will meet up those obligations.

“It was emphasised that states and federal governments must work together to get Nigeria out of its present economic predicament to make Nigeria a better society for all of us.”

When asked whether the President ordered that all salary arrears will be cleared by each state before Christmas, Okorocha
responded, “Yes, with the Paris Club coming, every state must ensure that workers get their salaries to enable them enjoy the Christmas. I made it clear.”

Also asked to clarify his statement to the effect that the 50 per cent of the Paris Club refund balance will be in the 2018 budget and the resolution to use it to pay salary arrears this December, he said that there was a meeting of Minimum Wage Committee and the Federal Government had set up a Minimum wage to address the issue of salary in line with the ILO.

But at this juncture, Governor El-Rufai interjected to clarify the position of the matter.

He said, “Let me explain. The Paris Club refund figures need to be reconciled. While the reconciliation process was going on, the
President approved that 50 per cent of the original amount be paid to the states.

“The payment started from last year. We still have balance of the first 50 per cent. This is what the president said must be paid in time for the state governments to meet their obligations before Christmas because he is concerned that many families depend
solely on their salaries for rent, for the festive period.

“That had been decided. The balance of the first 50 per cent is what we are expecting now before Christmas. The President has
approved that and said it must be paid.”

On the amount the governors were expecting from the 50 per cent balance, he said, “I don’t know the amount. I am sure that if you contact the Ministry of Finance, they can give you the total amount.

I only know what my state is likely to get.
“There is another 50 per cent that needs to be paid when the figures are reconciled.

The reconciliation is going to be concluded
before the end of the year. The Chief of Staff to the President has ensured that the committee working on the reconciliation will conclude its work before the end of the year.

“So, what the governors are requesting from the president is a directive – ‘go ahead to include the next 50 per cent in the 2018
budget and that is going to be looked at.’

“Every state will get its own share of the Paris-Club refund. It will not get more. Every state has a specific amount that was deducted.

That amount may not be enough to cover the arrears; it may not be, because you cannot get more than what you are entitled to.

“It varies from state to state. My state (Karina) has no salary arrears at all. So, it is a mute issue. Kano doesn’t have salary
arrears. Whatever we are getting, we just continue with our development projects.

“Some states have salary arrears that are bigger than what they are getting from the Paris Club refund. Even when they get it, they will not be able to clear the salary arrears. But it is better to reduce it so
that people will have happier Christmas than nothing at all.”

Criticise But Don't Mock Our Anti-Graft War - Lai Mohammed Tells Media

The minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has appealed to the media to fully support the current administration’s fight against corruption, saying the fourth estate of the realm cannot afford to sit on the fence as far as the battle to rid the nation of corruption is concerned.

Declaring open the 68th General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON) in Abuja yesterday, the minister said while the media should not hesitate to criticise the government’s strategy for the war against corruption, when necessary, it should do so without mocking the government.

‘’In recent times, it is not unusual to read such headlines as ‘Buhari’s Government Losing Anti-Corruption War’, ‘Buhari’s Anti-Corruption War is Failing’, ‘Arewa Youths Knock President Buhari Over Failing Anti-corruption War’. This is sheer mockery. And this war is not Buhari’s war. It is our war,’’ he said.

On why all hands must be on deck to fight corruption, Alhaji Mohammed said corruption is the reason for the many ills being experienced in the country today, including erratic power supply, poorly-equipped hospitals, lack of motorable roads, poor quality of life, poor economy, lack of jobs and insecurity.

‘’After previous administrations spent billions of dollars on power, all we inherited – when we took over on the 29th of May 2015 – was 2,690 megawatts. That is due to corruption. After previous governments budgeted billions for roads over the years, what we inherited are death traps.

‘’That is due to corruption. Why did Boko Haram thrive for so long? The answer is corruption, because money meant for the purchase of weapons for the military were simply diverted. Why did we inherit an economy in dire straits? It is corruption. For a country that sold oil at over 100 dollars per barrel for years, we simply failed to save for the rainy day, and when the rain came, it beat us silly,’’ he said.

The minister said the war against corruption is the toughest of the three broad issues that the Buhari administration campaigned with, ‘’because fighting corruption anywhere is like walking a lonely road.’’

‘’While many will join hands with you to tackle insecurity or to revamp the economy, you are on your own when you take on corruption.

‘’Most Nigerians were direct beneficiaries of corruption. Many were subsidized by corruption. Now that the gravy train of corruption is fast derailing, many are finding it difficult to come to terms with it. That’s the origin of the ‘Bring Back Corruption’ Campaign being carried out by certain elements in our society,’’ he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said the war against corruption becomes tougher when the media is not fully on board, adding: ‘’When the media seizes on every setback we suffer in prosecuting this war, they give succour to the corrupt. When the media falls for the distraction tactics of those who are mortally afraid of this war, they weaken the battle.’’

In his speech the acting chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr Ibrahim Magu, disclosed that with the full support of the mass media the war against corruption in the country could be fully won in the next six month.

He described the media as a critical stakeholder in the fight against corruption in the country.

Magu called on the media to raise the alarm against any corrupt element and expose looters.

‘’The media has a very big role to play. I am very impressed with them. If the media can support us we will fully achieve our mandate. With the support of the media the nation will purge all corrupt elements in six months.

‘’As a media practitioner you are naturally a corruption crusader. I am calling on the media to support us. I am not accusing the media of being biased but I love criticism, corrupt criticism. It will aid us to achieve our mandate and sit tight.

‘’As a media practitioner you are naturally an anti-corruption crusader and whistle blower. I am using this medium to call on the media to expose all corrupt elements in the current administration,’’ he added.

FG demands explanation from Italy over burial of 26 girls

The Federal Government has expressed dismay over Italy ’ s hasty burial of the 26 Nigerian girls who were found dead on the Mediterranean Sea .

The bodies of the girls were found on a sinking vessel on the Mediterranean about two weeks ago and there were reports that they might have been sexually abused
before they were murdered .

Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri - Erewa , told journalists in Abuja on Monday that the Italian Embassy had earlier indicated to the Director General , National Agency for
Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons that the burial of the girls would take place in Salerno , Italy on November 26 , 2017 .

But the Italian authorities , she said , went ahead with the burial last Friday , without informing the Nigerian government , adding that the NAPTIP director was
currently in Italy to engage with the Italian authorities ahead of the scheduled burial date .

The SSA , who addressed newsmen alongside a NAPTIP representative , Mr . Abdulrahim Shaibu , explained that a
protest letter had been sent to the Italian envoy in Nigeria over the matter .

“ Why were they ( the bodies ) hurriedly buried nine days before the date communicated to the DG , NAPTIP by the
Italian Embassy without any information to the Nigerian Government? Why the rush to bury the bodies without carrying out a post - mortem to determine the causes of
death ?” she queried .

Dabiri - Erewa said information indicated that only three of the girls were identified as Nigerians , noting that the identities of the other victims had yet to be ascertained
before they were interred .

She noted that another issue of concern was that the victims ’ families might have wanted them buried in their countries of origin .

The SSA also condemned the reported sale of Africans in a Libyan slave market as broadcast by the CNN , saying
this was unacceptable , despicable and inhuman.

She said , “ On the issue of Africans sold by Africans in Libya to Europe , as reported by the CNN in a report titled , ‘ People for sale ; where lives are auctioned for $400 , ’ this is totally unacceptable , despicable , and
inhuman and should be condemned by anyone who is human and has blood running through their veins. ”

International Organisation on Migration and the Economic Community for West African States , to intervene in the matter and tackle the issue of slavery happening in Libya .

“ The perpetrators of this heinous crime should also be
sanctioned , ” she added .

Man Arraigned For Using Female Facebook Account For N1.5 Million Fraud

The EFCC Kaduna Zonal Office, today, Monday, November 27, 2017, arraigned one Abubakar Isiyaku before Justice Mohammed Yahaya of the State High Court, Kano, on a one-count charge bordering on Criminal Breach of Trust and Obtaining by False Pretence.

Investigations into the case revealed that the accused who allegedly specialises in disguising as a female fraudulently opened a facebook account with profile name Hajia Fatima Mohmammed and through this medium, continuously chatted and eventually exchanged numbers with the complainant.

Along the line, they arranged to meet one on one, but being that Abubakar was not a female as he portrayed all this while, and lied to the complainant on the day they were to meet that his mum was hospitalised in Lagos.

Having realised that he had earned the trust of the complainant, he decided to further his plan by informing him(complainant)that his mum needs to be flown out for an emergency medical procedure in Saudi Arabia and would need the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira as a loan to make arrangements.

Surprisingly, after a while, the accused called the complainant with a purported Saudi line to intimate him about the progress of treatment and asked for an additional Five Hundred Thousand Naira to further offset the remaining medical bills. The complainant again sent the amount.

Having fully mapped out his plan, he then informed the complainant about their return to Nigeria and possibility of refunding the borrowed monies but met another hitch as his father was purportedly arrested at the airport upon arrival by the EFCC, his accounts frozen and needed money to bail his father which will all be paid back from the sum of Two Billion Naira that was hidden somewhere in the father's house.

The complainant in his statement revealed that a total of One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira was given to the accused so far and after some time his phone lines were no longer reachable and efforts to retrieve all his money became futile.

The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charge and prosecuting counsel, Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad urged the court to fix a date for hearing while the defence counsel, Habib Shittu filed for the accused's bail which the prosecuting counsel asked for time to scrutinize and respond to.

The Judge subsequently ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending ruling on his bail application. The case is adjourned to 18th and 19th of December, 2017 for ruling on bail application and commencement of trial.
