The Editorial/Pubilicity CDS group (Giant of the Pen) held a day workshop tagged: FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM at Muslim Community Lokogoma.
The workshop had in attendance:
Rev.Tayo Adedapo (Asst. Director, Public Relations Unit ,NYSC Kogi State).
Mr. Ali Atabor (Former NUJ Chairman).
Hon. Oluwafemi (SSA to the Governor on Legal Matters).
Mrs Juliana Oluofuba (Schedule Officer)
Presidents and members of other CDS groups were equally present.
The programme started with registration, NYSC/CDS Anthem and then proceeded to the welcome address which was given by Rev. Tayo Adedapo (Asst. Director, Public Relations Unit NYSC Kogi State), he welcomed everyone to the seminar and gave a brief introduction of the workshop theme: FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM, he encouraged those that doesn't have a certificate in journalism to get a post diploma in journalism.
He went further to say that intelligent reporting as a journalist, you should know your right and freedom of expression as well as the person you are reporting, every journalist have right to life. When reporting, know the right of the person, when the person says he/she is not interested, you don't have the right to write about his personal life.
He ended his speech by entertaining few questions, where a Corper asked whether it was right for one to report political matters
in the State of Service and he said YES but such report should pass through him, that as a reporter, one shouldn't take sides.
Shortly after that, Performance CDS group came on stage to dance.
After the dance, the first speaker, Hon. Oluwafemi gave a lecture on THE RULE OF LAW AND JOURNALISM, where he started by defining what's journalism and who a journalist is, he said according to Nigeria Press Council Act 1992, that a journalist is a person not less than 18 years of age, engaged in collection,processing and dissemination of information.
He went further to speak more about the practice of journalism within the law
He ended his lectures by attending to one or two questions
Lastly, Mr. Ali Atabor gave a lecture on FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM, he started by comending the young journalists, the Barrister and the PRO for their wonderful lectures. He went further to talk the new media and the traditional media, stating that new media is not a threat to the traditional media.
He concluded by saying that with hardwork and committement, one would go places in the field of journalism.
Refreshments were served when questions were being asked.
The PRO gave vote of thanks and the workshop came to an end.
