BAYELSA State Commissioner for Education, Mr Jonathan Obuebite, has said with the introduction of boarding schools, children will no longer see criminals as their role models but will emulate good people in the society.
Boarding school system was introduced in the state last year by the Governor Seriake Dickson led administration, 20 years after the creation of the state. Obuebite in an interview in Yenagoa said the boarding school system will mould the character of the students and make them worthy ambassadors of the state. He said: “Our target is to have 15,000 boarding students in the state per session in secondary schools. “Our dream is that between 15 and 20 years from now, what the children will become will be the target of this government so that these children will no longer see criminals as their role models but will emulate good people in the society.
That is the target we are setting. “Before now, children see those that make quick money as their role models. Before now, the syndrome we had in most of our communities is what we call ‘standby,’ a situation where oil companies and corporations, rather than train youths in skills, pay them money and they stay at home without working. “Do you know that 20 years after the creation of Bayelsa, it is this government that brought boarding schools to the state? You are all aware of what we were going through before now.“
