The National Youth Service Corps has announced that corps members can now be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) during their service year.
Speaking at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State on Thursday, Dec. 7, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Sule Kazaure disclosed that the policy has been approved by the Federal Government.
This according to the NYSC boss, would afford corps members to visit hospitals for treatment anytime they were sick during their service year and to prevent avoidable deaths. His words:
“The Federal Government has approved that corps members should be enrolled for the NHIS. I received the call last night and it is a good thing.”
The DG had earlier inspected a laboratory built by a corps member, Kayode Agarawu, who is serving with Eyiowu-Awi Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The owner of the pharmaceuticals company, Alhaji Atanda Babatunde, sponsored the project.
Kazaure also inspected the closed-circuit television cameras installed to monitor movements in and out of the camp in order to beef up security and ensure the safety of the corps members.
While also addressing the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream One Corps Members at Enugu and Abia State Orientation Camps, the NYSC DG assured corps members that their safety and welfare during their service year
will not be compromised.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, the Acting Director, Public Relations Department of the scheme, Kazaure promised the corps members that the scheme will do anything and everything
possible to ensure that every entitlement due for them will be paid promptly.
The NYSC boss also advised the corps members to exhibit exemplary conduct worthy of emulation by others while discharging their statutory responsibilities during the service year.
While warning corps members not to embark on any unauthorized journey to avoid being exposed to higher risks, Kazaure urged them to follow the laid down procedures in the NYSC Scheme if they, however, have genuine reasons to travel.
The corps members were further advised to improve the living standard of their host communities by executing developmental
projects that would also serve as good legacies after their service year.
Briefing the Director-General on Camp situation, Enugu State Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Ikaka said that the Corps Members have exhibited a high level of discipline and indicated interest in Skills Acquisition programmes towards becoming employers of labour.
Ikaka added that the Camp depends on power generating sets as the only source of power and commended the GOC 82 Div. Nigerian Army for assisting the Camp with water tankers.
He, however, lamented lack of utility vehicles to ease the prompt discharge of official engagements.
In the same vein, the Abia State coordinator, Francesca Ifon, told General Kazaure that the corps members have been co-opted into various camp committees and are well-behaved.
She appealed for more assistance from the State Government for NYSC programmes in the state.
