Restructuring: N’Delta leader backs Obasanjo

A Niger Delta leader and convener of the South South Reawakening Group, Joseph Ambakederimo, has called on Nigerians to ignore those championing the campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria. He stressed that even if the country was restructured, the various challenges confronting Nigeria would still persist.

Ambakederimo, who spoke on Tuesday at a forum with journalists to celebrate his 56th birthday in Enerhen-Effurun, Uvwie Council Area of Delta State, supported the submission of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that what Nigerians needed was the restructuring of mindset and character for the country to move forward.

Ambakederimo stated that restructuring was not the answer to the various challenges facing the country, stressing that the problem with Nigeria had always been the lack of good governance.

“Our position is at variance with the clamour to restructure the country. We see nothing wrong with the structure of Nigeria as it is today and in future. The problem with Nigeria is good governance and nothing more.

“Corruption has made us see ourselves as ‘I am a Muslim and you are a Christian. It is only corruption that has somewhat bound us together because when they want to steal and appropriate to themselves our common patrimony there wouldn’t be Christian or Muslim.

“Therefore, our position is that we have to restructure ourselves, our mindsets first before we talk of restructuring of the country. Nothing will work even if this country is restructured. It is not the answer to our challenges as a people. What we see is a political gimmick to deceive Nigerians. Those championing restructuring were once in power and they did nothing to help the system.”
