Lassa Fever: Kogi Doctors hold procession in honor of late colleague





Medical Doctors across  Kogi State gathered in Lokoja  to pay their last respect to one of their own who died of Lassa Fever.

Last Doctor Idowu  Ahmed died on Sunday evening in Irua Edo State at the age of 30.

At a procession held at the Federal Medical Centre Lokoja on Tuesday, doctors chantted songs of sorrows that they have lost a great colleague.

When they moved round the hospital premises, they settled at the Administrative block of FMC where the Chief Medical  Director Doctor Olatunde Alabi addressed them.

Addressing the bereaved persons,  the Chief Medical Director Federal Medical Centre Lokoja Dr Olatunde Alabi said the hospital in collaboration with relevant agencies are working round the clock to stop further spread of the outbreak.

"Actually, late Doctor Idowu Ahmed is one of our new doctor that we have here and he has been very hardworking and dedicated to his duties. We are aware that there is an epidemic in the country and we are trying to put our own measures in place so that we do don't have further spread of the disease."

In his remarks,  the Kogi State Chairman Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Dr Godwin Tijani told our correspondent that those that had contact with the deceased have been quarantined.

According to him,  "We feel saddened by the death of one of our colleague.  He is a young shap and after two months he is no more. We will forever miss him.

As I speak to you, some of his colleagues who had contact with him have been quarantined and some of them had started taking drugs to ensure the effects is not felt.

"I cant be precise with the numbers of those under quarantine simply because the numbers keeps increasing.

"NMA, Kogi State Ministry of Health and the management of of Federal Medical Center have swung into action by keeping  a close watch on the diseased family members especially those who have had contact with him."

On the effort of NMA to stop further spread of the disease, he disclosed that the body is already  engaging in enlightenment campaigns on the need for the general public to know more about Lassa Fever, its cause and how it could be prevented.
